Open Afternoon Thursday 5th December (2.00-3.30pm)

Lama Shenpen HookhamFilm: Lama Shenpen Hookham is an Englishwoman who has been training for over fifty years in the Mahamudra and Dzogchen traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. She left England for India in the early 1970s where she was ordained by the 16th Karmapa (the head of the Kagyu tradition) and lived there as a nun for six years. Shenpen is fluent in Tibetan and has translated for many Tibetan teachers over the years. She now resides at the Hermitage of the Awakened Heart, her home and retreat centre in North Wales, where she teaches and holds courses.

In this talk given in 2018, Shenpen focuses on the three main aspects of love and compassion, wisdom and emptiness (reality and the facing up to reality), and the practices that can be adopted by those who wish to take the Buddhist path in life. She makes it very clear that the Buddha’s teachings on the cause of suffering, the cessation of suffering and the path to end suffering was never a materialist’s view of totality.

Shenpen is a confident and humorous speaker who is capable of interpreting the teachings for ordinary people, having herself spent most of her life living those traditional teachings to the full.

The film runs for about ninety minutes and will be followed by discussion and tea.

All welcome.
