In his own life, the Buddha rarely described his awakening in detail. When asked to explain the nature of his enlightenment, he often remained silent, or he responded in ways that encouraged his followers to look inward rather than cling to his words. His teachings were always provisional, tools to help others awaken. He knew that the truth he had realised could not be captured by language, nor could it be fully transmitted through concepts. It had to be experienced directly by each individual.
