The deeper purpose of the Dharma can be overlooked
In the West, Buddhism has been embraced as a source of peace and wellbeing, which is certainly a positive development. However, there is a tendency for the teachings to become entangled with the cultural values of self-optimisation, achievement, and productivity. Practices such as mindfulness are often marketed as techniques for stress relief or as tools for enhancing personal success, leading to a proliferation of methods, techniques, and retreats designed to fit neatly into the framework of modern self-help. In this process, the deeper purpose of the Dharma can be overlooked.
