Dharma Read: The Brightness of Awareness.

Awareness (sati) is bright and penetrating. It is not simply attention, but a deep, clear seeing that goes beyond surface appearances. When awareness is cultivated, it has the power to shine a light on delusion, revealing it for what it is. The brightness of awareness is not an intellectual understanding, but an experiential clarity — an ability to see things as they truly are, in the present moment, without the filters of desire, fear, or ignorance.

Yet, awareness is not something we create; it is already present, a natural quality of mind. What is required is the practice of mindfulness, which helps us to bring awareness to the fore, to cultivate it, and to allow its brightness to illuminate the areas of the mind that delusion has clouded. The more we practise, the more the brightness of awareness becomes a steady presence, guiding us away from the clever tricks of delusion.
