Dharma Read
There is something almost delightfully human about the beginning of the Kevaddha Sutta. A monk wants to know where the four elements find no footing, and where name-and-form (nāma-rūpa) cease. So he goes looking for an answer. He approaches various gods, but none can help. Eventually he is directed to Brahmā, who, after a little ceremonial grandeur, admits that he does not know either. He tells the monk, in effect, that the person he really ought to ask is the Buddha.
When the question finally reaches the Buddha, his answer is wonderfully enigmatic:
Viññāṇaṃ anidassanaṃ anantaṃ sabbato pabhaṃ.
Which might be rendered: consciousness, signless, timeless and everywhere shining brightly.
